Sep 25, 2011 · #1. What kind of lube do I use in a 205 T-case? I have an old Ford shop manual and it says to use 50wt engine oil----I will be driving this truck in winter -20 cold and summer 90 heat. Also how much lube is needed? As has been discussed in previous posts, NP205 transfer cases require 80-90wt Gear oil. Sure, you could run something else. How do you put fluid in a transfer case? Locate the filler plug on the side of the transfer case. Clean the filler plug and the area around it using a shop rag; this avoids contaminating the new transfer case fluid.

The NP205 is supposed to use cat pee (gear oil). ATF contamination of the transfer case oil is likely due to a bad seal in the transfer case adapter. If you replace the seal, all should be well. Put some black RTV on the transfer case re install the seal housing, (make sure it is clocked correctly) Install the output yolk with a little oil on it to make a good seal with the new seal.
